Photography in Web Design: Good Photography can make a decisive difference to
the impact and impression that a web site, brochure or flier has. Even with the
right equipment and college qualifications there is a huge difference between a
really talented photographer and a standard one.
Use of Depth of Field (DOF) in Photography for the Web.
There are many important aspects in photography in web design, but for
example top professionals typically have a very good concept of the use of DOF
to segment the image and bring out the salient features which less talented
individuals are not aware of. Of course some of this is equipment related
-semi-professional cameras costing just a few hundred pounds lack the numerical
aperture to fully exploit DOF while the amateur or less experienced professional
tends to use the camera in fully automatic mode with reduces control of this
sort of professional effect.
Framing and Photography in Web Design
Other aspects that highlight the professional include framing - deciding
where an image begins and ends which is as vital to the meaning of an image as
composition. Often what is left out is as important as what is included. In the
context of these picture perhaps trees in the foreground at the edges (top
left!) give an idyllic elysian context (while cars would give an urban motif).
Mise En Scène in Website Photography
Closely related is Mise En Scène - the design and arrangement of the image.
Every element of an image contributes to its meaning, and much time and thought
is devoted to Mise En Scène by the creators of an image. Although an audience's
attention may be focused on characters in the foreground, they will also be
looking at the background for additional clues to meaning.
Architectural Photography for the Web
In architectural photo sets (e.g. pictures of your companies buildings)
careful choice of lighting and perspective and control of vanishing points make
all the difference between the impression given by a snapshot and the sort of
picture that creates the same impression of professionalism for your firm as a
full page advert in a Sunday paper colour supplement.
