One of the Great Selling points of Microsoft's Windows Software over the past two decades has been the impressive backwards software compatibilty and powerful driver support that has put Microsoft miles ahead of in worthy competitors Apple and Linux. So has Microsoft built on this impressive legacy to make the next upgrade in operating sysems the no-brainer that the last ones/

Strangely enough the answer seems to be no! The experience of moveing to Vista resembles that of moving to a modern distro of Linux like Mandriva 10 more than simply upgrading a windows system  

Software not suppoted by Windows Vista

Initial reports using Windows Vista x64 suggest that over 80% of existing software proves to be incompatible.

Key pieces of software that you'll have to say goodbye to for ever include

  • GMail Drive
  • Strangely Vista Home Premium/IE7 does not support showing embedded WMV files in web pages 'out of the box'
  • IE7 is not backwards compatible with IE6 in its method of scaling WMV files leading to distortion of WMV files in IE7

Hardware not supported by Windows Vista

Initial reports using Windows Vista x64 suggest that over 70% of existing hardware has no functional driver.

  • Any VIA graphics adaptor
  • Logitech iFeel Mouse
